HIKING, NATURE EXPERIENCE This 1 000 ha reserve around the Loerie Dam is open to all, but is intended primarily for use by school and other groups to promote an awareness of the environment and conservation. Situated in scenic, mountainous terrain, it protects both the dense, thorny, Valley Bushveld scrub and the Eastern Cape fynbos (heath) vegetation, and is particularly colourful in winter. Location: West of Port Elizabeth Access: From Port Elizabeth follow the N2 westwards; after 40 km take the R331 towards Hankey; Loerie is 11 km from the N2, and the reserve turnoff is just beyond the town. Accommodation: A dormitory that accommodates 48 persons and a timber hut for 18 persons; used by hikers and by educational groups. Other facilities: 3- and 7-km walking trails. Open: Throughout the year Opening time: Sunrise to sunset.
